There is a notion that sunscreen is for lighter skin people. Most dark skin people, especially Africans, either ignore it or do not know the importance of sunscreen for skincare.
I once was like, you thinking sunscreen is for westerners. Glowing up seeing only white people using it when basking in the sun or swimming. I think our parents were not aware of the importance of sunscreen, so we could not have a chance to learn from them.
Sun has UVA and UVB rays which can be damaging to the skin. They cause discolouration, pre-mature wrinkles and fine lines.
The fact is everybody needs sunscreen as it blocks these rays, significantly reducing the likelihood of sunburn.
Just be aware that sunscreens are formulated based on skin types. However, they are few brands for all skin types, and even people with sensitive skin can use them.
Sun Protection and Vitamin D
We all need vitamin D as it spurs bone growth and immune system boosting. When you expose your skin to sunlight, it manufactures vitamin D. I know you now think about getting vitamin D from the sun, but you wonder how UVA and UVB exposure is harmful to the skin.
Well, you can acquire vitamin D from food and supplements without subjecting yourself to the multiple risks of unprotected sun exposure.
Important notes
- Shield your skin against the damage caused by other aggressors such as infrared rays and pollution by applying UVA and UVB broad-spectrum protection sunscreen. They say there is no sunscreen with 100% protection, but the higher the SPF, the better. Use sunscreen with SPF (Sun Protection Factor) at least from 30 and above.
- Just as with other skincare products, choose sunscreen base on your skin type. They are few sunscreens that are suitable for all skin types. I use Bioré sunscreen for my face with broad-spectrum SPF 50+. It is a lightweight formula, does not leave the white cast and suitable for all skin types; even people with sensitive skin can still use it. There are some good brands out there; take your time and research.
- Wear hats and sunglasses help to minimize the likelihood, but you still need sunscreen. During the day, apply your moisturizer and finish with a broad-spectrum sunscreen rated SPF 30 or greater.
- Always wash your face before sleeping. Never sleep with sunscreen.
