Comedogenic

Comedogenic means that a substance has the potential to clog pores. Many skincare and makeup products contain ingredients that can clog pores and lead to the development of acne. Therefore, it is important to use oil-free and non-comedogenic products if you are susceptible to breakouts.

What are comedogenic ratings?

Comedogenic ratings are a measure of how likely a substance is to clog pores and cause acne. A substance with a high comedogenic rating is more likely to cause acne than a substance with a low comedogenic rating.

There are six different levels of comedogenic ratings, from 0 to 5.

  • 0 – Will not clog pores
  • 1 – Very low chance of clogging pores
  • 2 – Moderately low chance of clogging pores
  • 3 – Moderate chance of clogging pores
  • 4 – Fairly high chance of clogging pores
  • 5 – High chance of clogging pores

A substance with a comedogenic rating of 3 or higher is considered to be comedogenic, and is more likely to cause acne.
